Ractopamine is a phenolethanolamine beta-adrenoceptor agonist that is used for the improvement of weight gain, carcass leanness and feed efficiency in pigs. Ractopamine is marketed as the hydrochloride with a minimal purity of 92% and exists in two diastereomeric forms which are identified as RS, SR and RR, SS. The RR-isomer, butopamine, is a potent cardiotonic in humans. Ractopamine hydrochloride had not been previously evaluated by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives.
